Social Competencies are integrated through all classroom programs.
At Katandra School, the content focuses on developing the social and emotional capabilities that all young people need to acquire in order to be successful in school, experience wellbeing, and have positive relationships including making contributions to others and the community.
Teachers specifically teach social skills programs, that build the students capacity in skills of turn taking, sharing, following rules and ability to work effectively in teams.
As the students’ progress to the upper years, social skills maintains this focus but diversifies with parent permission to include basic sexual education and drug education as required. The goal of the school-based Sexuality Education and Drug Education programs is to build on knowledge, skills, and behaviours, thus enabling young people to make responsible and safe choices.
Respectful Relationships is a mandated curriculum program that must be delivered across all schools in Victoria. Katandra delivers this program to build the students’ knowledge in understanding identity, gender equity, cultural diversity and stereotypes.
Katandra School also has leadership programs incorporating Class Captains, Student Representative Council (SRC) and School Captains. The SRC meet with the Leading Teacher of Student Management & Wellbeing on a fortnightly basis.
Students also participate in the Life Education program each year which educates the students in regard to healthy eating, physical activity, bullying, cyber-safety, drugs, alcohol, smoking and positive communication. Students receive components of the program that are relevant to their developmental stage of learning.
